Take It On Tuesday! Finish up!

©2013 Jupiterimages Corporation

Since this is the fifth Tuesday of the month, I have deemed it “Extra Time Tuesday.”  We have really taken on quite a bit this month, and most of the tasks where not the usual quick tasks I have been giving before this month.  I would love for you to take the rest of the week and work on something that maybe you were able to start but not finish as you had hoped.  It may mean more time in your bedroom closet going through your shoes.  It may be that linen closet and another shelf besides your sheets and towels.  There may be a few that still have a bag or two waiting to go to Goodwill because you did such a good job cleaning out coats and clothes.  Whatever little task is nagging at you to finish, go for it.  I hope you have really seen some great improvement in the use of your closet space and are encouraged for what you have cleaned out this month.

Beth's Portable Office Bag

I write regularly at coffee shops, so I use the bag shown above to hold my items.

Soft outer bag helps protect technical items. It is large enough to hold iPad, portable keyboard, and a separate pouch of items as well as paperwork, Bible, etc. It zips shut.

Inner pouch: I love this pouch because it represents the types of things I do at coffee shops. Inside I keep my charging cord, batteries, extra batteries for the keyboard, planning pad (I like to jot things while I work), pen/stylus, paperclips and any other little officy-type item I might need.

I try to keep this stuff together at home too, because I might use the iPad in the bedroom, the living room, or home office. By disciplining myself, I can keep track of the charging cord and other items.

Take It On Tuesday! Bedroom Closet, part 2

©2013 Jupiterimages Corporation

Thanks for coming back this week to read the task.  I was afraid you may stay away because you knew we would be talking again about the bedroom closet!  Let me pause just a minute for those that may be reading this wondering what in the world I am talking about.  If you are just joining the blog, this is our fourth week in our closet clean-up work for the month of July.  Feel free to look at the previous posts and see what great work has been accomplished in the last few weeks.  Join in with us!

I don’t know how far you may have gotten last week, but I am going to move on to the clothes in your closet.  Again, I want to try to be very specific so that this task does not feel overwhelming.  I can totally relate to the fact that even thinking about working on our clothes in the closet brings about panic!  Let’s try to break it down.  Let’s first pick which season of clothes you want to look at right now.  I was going to suggest you go through winter clothes, but I decided to leave that up to your discretion.  Once you have chosen a season, I want you to pull out 10 pieces of clothing at a time.  Make a decision about what to do with those pieces before moving on.  Now, you may have a piece or two that you just are not sure about or wonder if you have something to complement that piece of clothing.  A “maybe pile” is permissible, but once that pile has gotten to ten pieces, you need to look at it again.  Tackle ten pieces of clothing at a time until you make it through that season’s clothes.  This is a perfect task to work on 15 to 20 minutes at a time.  If you are keeping the item, just hang it back up.  If you are discarding the piece make a pile for that as well.  There will be some mess while you get through the whole task, but it should be minimal.  Maybe give yourself the goal of having it done in 2 days or something similar to that.  Again, I welcome comments or suggestions from others about how they maintain their closet.

Take It On! Tuesday - Bedroom Closet

©2013 Jupiterimages Corporation

How are you feeling about having some straightened closets in your house? I hope in the last couple weeks you have opened your two closets and have been excited about what you are accomplishing this month!  You knew it would come to this next closet.  Yes, we are going to talk about your bedroom closet.  I think I will actually talk about this closet for the next two weeks.  There is a lot to “take on” in our bedroom closet.  I think breaking it into pieces will feel more manageable.

This week we are going to talk about accessories.  This would be belts, scarves, shoes, jewelry (if you keep that in your closet), etc.  I want you to pull each category out one at a time and deal with that accessory, and then tackle another one.  If you do it one group at a time, you can stop when you run out of time and not feel like you are leaving your whole room in a mess.  I think it would be easiest to start with belts or scarves.  You could probably make some quick decisions about what you want to keep from these categories.  If these things are just scattered and don’t have a particular place in your closet, think about hanging some kind of hook that would allow you to put these items in one place so that you would know what you have which would probably allow you to wear them more frequently.

What accessories did you organize this week?

Embrace Your Uniqueness

©2013 Jupiterimages Corporation
You are not the same as everyone else. I'm not the same as my friends or even the other two authors of Organizing from the Heart.

For example...one of the authors does great at housework late at night after kids are in bed. My toggle switch starts going off around 9pm, but I have a sharper mind in the morning.

I tend to break most projects into small tasks done repeatedly over time, in as little as 15 minutes or less. My husband is more wired to attack a project and focus on it for an extended amount of time, preferably uninterrupted.

One of you out there likes to take two hours each weekend to completely clean the house, while others clean as they go and may not follow a set routine.

Some of you don't mind dishes sitting overnight, but would never leave the house with the bed unmade while others never really make the bed.

One young mom likes to teach her kids how to keep an orderly playroom, while another super energetic creative one gets on the floor and makes a mess with them.

Which one is better? Neither. God made us uniquely to worship Him and impact others through our unique design. Let's stop comparing ourselves to others and instead seek His wisdom as to how He wants us to best honor Him and our family/circle of influence. It may look different from how someone else does it. That's fine. Really. Them matching your approach is not a healthy form of affirmation to you. God's opinion is what matters.

Take It On! Tuesday - Coat Closet

©2013 Jupiterimages Corporation

Are you ready for the second closet for the month?  If you are just seeing this blog for the first time we are in “clean out closet” July!  The tasks this month are all surrounding getting our closets in better shape.

Let's deal with the coat closet!  This one is convicting for me.  It is so easy to just stuff not only coats but other miscellaneous stuff in this closet.  So in order not to get overwhelmed, let’s focus on a main goal.  If this is a small closet for you, I encourage you to pull out everything in the closet and just see what you have in there.  If you can easily (ha, ha) see things and know how you want to get it organized, then do that.  If that is too much, just focus on what is hanging in the closet and make a decision about those items. There are probably coats that need to be given away because they are too small or ones you aren’t even using.  Give them to Goodwill and let someone else benefit from your lovely purchase!

I would love to hear how this is going for you guys.  Please comment!

5 Ways to Simplify Your Communication Life

©2013 Jupiterimages Corporation
We are inundated with all kinds of communication everyday, to the point where it can become overwhelming. Here are five tips to cut down on the noise.

Purge your email. Periodically consider whether you really need that weekly email newsletter. For example, in the past, I tried jumping into the couponing pool. I've come pretty much right back out (that's another topic.) In the process of trying it, I ended up subscribing to several sites and then hardly looking at the deals. Time to unsubscribe from a lot of them.

But Beth, what if you miss out on a deal? I miss out on deals all the time. I can always find the sites later, or bookmark them into a "saving money" folder so if I get the urge to do something like eat out or some other fun activity, or have something specific I need to buy, I can research sales and coupons then.

Turn off notifications. If you are active on social media sites like Facebook or Twitter, adjust your settings so you are only getting notifications for things that really interest you. These days, it's easy for people to add you to groups, and if you don't have settings adjusted to your preference, you could have long lists of notifications or emails of when someone posted in that group. I've recently done this myself for Facebook groups that I want to remain part of, without being reminded every time someone posts there.

Also consider adjusting notifications on your cell phone. If you use a phone that lets you see email, it may be best you may not need to have a sound or icon come up every time a new email comes in. You can check it when you want once or twice a day.

Be cautious about your cell phone. Many of you may be using a cell phone exclusively rather than a land line. In that case, you really don't have much choice about  giving out your number. But if you still have a home phone and a cell phone, be cautious about giving out your cell phone number too widely. We already deal with lots of interruptions in life and extra calls may not be necessary in the middle of your days.  Some time ago, I gave my cell phone number out to a business I was calling to inquire about something for a client. We decided not to go in that direction, but unfortunately I occasionally receive calls hoping we will be interested in something currently offered. Thankfully these have subsided, but it makes me realize I can be even more selective about who gets my cell phone number. I could've given my land line number which also acts as my business main line.

Use voice mail. Many messages can be handled by a simple voice mail--both leaving one and receiving one. You don't have to answer every call right away (same goes for email.) Let the phone go to VM if you are in the middle of something that needs focus such as driving or meeting with a friend. Really. It will be okay!

Use “do not mail” and “do not call” lists. From time to time, check www.directmail.com and www.donotcall.gov and get your name off of junk mail and telemarketing lists. Now, if you enjoy getting coupons, catalogs, samples, or other pieces of mail, so be it. But if you want to simplify--these services can help you out.

These are just a few ways to reduce communication noise. What works for you?

Take It On! Tuesday - Linen Closet

©2013 Jupiterimages Corporation

For the month of July we are going to work on closets in our homes—all kinds.  This will be an awesome month to do some serious straightening out of some “stuff” you have probably had tucked away for a long time!

Let’s start this week with your linen closet. Here is the main goal.  Take your bath towels and sheets and go through each set and decide if you need to keep it or not.  Think through how many towels or sheet sets you really need and only keep that many in your closet.  (Sometimes we take comfort in having so many towels and sheets for the “in case” kind of situation but that can lead to overstocking!)

Once you've determined the specific number that would be appropriate for your household, keep those sets, and add two extra for the “in case” situation.  (I have a feeling there are many of you that probably have towels and sheets that need to be thrown away or replaced.)

We have a family of four.  I have about 5 or 6 sets (two of the same kind) of bath towels that get rotated often and then an extra two sets.  I also have a few “not so nice towels” that are mismatched for that mess that may need to be cleaned up in the near future. I have recently bought a few new sets to replace some of the towels we had. (That's always nice!) My big goal at that time was to only have the number of towels that fit comfortably on the shelf dedicated to towels in the closet.  That also helped limit the number of towels I decided to keep.

Now it's your turn! Post in the comments below so we how you "Took It On" this week!
